Overview

Members of the department use genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry and computational biology for studying the structure and activities of cellular constituents, with an emphasis on cancer, regenerative medicine and diabetes. The Department is located on the first and sixth floors of Pinn Hall, and currently consists of twenty faculty members.

Faculty

The Department faculty represent a broad range of research interests with some emphasis on the biochemistry of the nucleus.  These include geneticists, biochemists, molecular biologists, and biophysicists, whose research focuses on computational biology, cryo-electron microscopy, DNA replication, transcriptional regulation, chromatin state, cell cycle control, genetic instability, nuclear import, noncoding RNA biology and antibody selectivity and design.

Students

The students and postdoctoral fellows of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics are an eclectic group from around the globe.  They form a very cohesive and interactive group.  Virtually everyone attends the weekly research seminar for outside speakers and weekly journal club/research club for currently members of the Department.  In addition, there are several more specialized journal and research clubs that meet on a regular basis with members of our own and other departments in the College of Arts & Sciences and School of Medicine.   A host of social activities, both organized and spontaneous, occur throughout the year.  Thus, the academic and research activities, as well as the many opportunities for interaction among students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty, help to shape an outstanding and cooperative research and training experience.
