Overview

The Department of Cell Biology offers a training program in Cell and Developmental Biology that highlights cutting-edge interests in morphogenesis and regenerative biology.  Ongoing research addresses fundamental issues at the cellular level (membrane and cytoskeletal dynamics, signal transduction, mitosis, cell adhesion, motility, mechanotransduction, polarity) and higher-order processes such as embryonic patterning, morphogenetic movements, tissue morphogenesis and repair. These issues are examined in contexts that include cell culture models, differentiated tissues, patterning embryos, and tissues during development and wound repair.

Faculty

The faculty associated with the Cell and Developmental Biology program are drawn both from the Biomedical Science departments and the Department of Biology.  They are unified in their focus on a mechanistic understanding of the biological events involved in morphogenesis and regenerative medicine, but are diversified in their approaches at the analytical level (subcellular, cellular, supracellular, tissue and organismal) as well as the technical methods.  The research interests of the faculty members are wide ranging and encompass the key aspects of morphogenesis and regeneration, including membrane and cytoskeletal dynamics, mitosis, cell adhesion, motility, mechanotransduction, and polarity.

Students

The Ph.D. Program in Cell and Developmental Biology offers students comprehensive instruction in the fundamentals of cell biology and embryonic development, as well as training in high-quality, state-of –the art scientific research.  In addition, students receive training in public presentation through participation in the Journal Club and Research in Progress, in scientific writing, and in research ethics.  Students also interact directly with visiting scientists doing innovative research in a variety of areas through the student lunch associated with the departmental seminar series.
