ISLS 301 - Nationalism and National Identity


This seminar examines the role of nationalism and national identity in two regions of particular interest, the British Isles and the Balkans. Two key questions examined are: How can national traditions peacefully be expressed and preserved in an age of increasing supranational identities such as the European Union and the global economy? Do human rights broadly defined and enforced by international organizations supersede the right of peoples to be governed with, and ruled by, those of common language and culture? (S, SS)
