RELB 268 - Medieval Tibetan Buddhist Art

This course addresses various issues of early Tibetan Buddhist art and various artistic traditions that contributed it its formation, within the context of the development of Buddhist thought and practice during the 10th through the 12th centuries. We look at the surviving monuments in Western Himalaya, Central Tibet and discuss murals, and portable sculpture and painting of that period. This era is often referred to as the Tibetan Buddhist Renaissance because of the resurgence of Buddhist culture. There is one field trip to either Richmond or Washington D.C. to view examples of this art. Cross-listed as ARTH 268. (SS)
