BIOL 862 - Evolutionary Ecology

This course examines how individuals, populations, and communities respond to their environments and how those responses are influenced by their evolutionary history. The classroom portion of the class looks at how traits and behaviors of individuals respond to environmental factors such as thermal stress and acidity, how population numbers are affected by predators, pathogens, and competitors, and how communities of interacting species are assembled and maintained. With fieldwork we look at how the flora and fauna of the Mountain Lake region reflects those principles of evolutionary ecology and, through field and lab projects, learn to use some of the comparative and experimental methods to study ecological hypotheses.
