ARTH 236 - Northern Renaissance Art


A lecture course covering the painting, sculpture and graphics arts from the Netherlands, France, England, and Central Europe during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Artists include Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Hans Holbein, Albrecht Durer, and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The uses of devotional art, the role of the patron, the development of the printed media, the impact of religious wars, witch hunts, and iconoclasm provide cultural and religious contexts for the changing role of art in northern Europe.
