MDST 334 - Women and Film

This course introduces students to a broad range of women’s activities within the film industry, from acting to editing, screenwriting and directing. It offers a broad historical and international overview of women working in film and is structured around both the industrial and political issues. It considers the work of women in different genres, such as comedy, melodrama and the action thriller, as well as examines issues relating to feminist film theory and representational practices, and explores the history of oppositional aesthetics associated with the feminist avant-garde and how those aesthetics have been incorporated into mainstream narrative practice. It also considers more formal issues having to do with performance, cinematography, editing, art direction and sound by examining and comparing the work of different directors and their historical and national contexts. Sessions are organized around theoretical questions having to do with genre, authorship, representation, race, aesthetics, and the avant-garde but are grounded in historical, industrial, and textual analysis.
