HIEA 2101 - Korea: Late Nineteenth through Early Twenty First Centuries


The history of Korea from 1876 into the first decade of the 21st century.  During the course of the semester we shall discuss the consequences for Korea of the end of the traditional East Asian order in the late 19th century, the characteristics and consequences of the period of Japanese colonial rule, the divergent routes followed in the north and the south following liberation in August of 1945, developments within the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, relations between the two countries, and prospects for reunification.
