ARTH 274 - Arts of the Himalayas This course will introduce students to the Buddhist art and architecture of the Himalayas (northern India, Nepal, Tibet). We will look at the variety of artistic expressions produced in these areas and consider them in the context of cultural and socio-political processes in the region. We will also explore the topics of Buddhist iconography, ritual and production of art; learn about styles and methods of typically Himalayan painting and sculputre. A field trip to the Virginia Museum of Art in Richmond, or the Freer and Sackler Galleries in Washington D.C. will also be part of the course.
Prerequisites & Notes Notes: Assigned readings, active participation in class, 2 quizzes, midterm, and final.
