LAW4 767 - Derivatives and Other Exotic Financial Instruments


This course will be concerned with financial instruments other than common stock and conventional debt securities. We will begin with options and financial futures and then discuss structured preferred stocks, exotic debt securities such as commodity-linked bonds, and swap agreements. Throughout we will be concerned with three questions: what is the economic function of these instruments; how are they valued; and how are they treated by the regulatory system? We will cover the relevant regulations of the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Prerequisites & Notes
Prerequisite: Accounting and Corporate Finance (or equivalent undergraduate, graduate or practical training in both subjects), Corporations or Corporations (Law & Business); Securities Regulation or Securities Regulation (Law & Business) (may be taken concurrently).
