LAW7 634 - Child Advocacy Clinic

This yearlong clinical course is offered in conjunction with JustChildren, a program of the Legal Aid Justice Center in Charlottesville. Students may represent children with legal issues in the areas of education law, laws governing access to services for incarcerated children, mental health and developmental disabilities law, and foster care and social services law. In some cases, students may work with a child’s public defender to develop sentencing options for the Juvenile Court that will meet the child’s needs. Students will represent children in negotiations and administrative hearings and will participate in court proceedings to the extent permitted by law. All students will be given an opportunity to work on policy issues that will be addressed by proposed legislation, administrative rule-making, or other means. Opportunities to work on impact litigation also may arise during the year.
