GBUS 8038 - Equities

The Equities course is designed for students interested in a career in investment management. The primary purpose of the course is to teach students how to value publicly traded equities. The valuation tools considered begin with the discounted cash flow and multiples techniques introduced in First Year Financial Management and Policies and the elective, First Year Valuation in Financial Markets. These techniques are augmented with other approaches as explained by a series of practicing money managers and equity analysts who serve as guest lecturers throughout the course. The course is premised on the assumption that the stock market is efficient overall but that valuation for certain equities varies at times from the true intrinsic value. In such a market, the careful application of fundamental analysis can uncover overvalued and undervalued companies. Similarly, the course entertains the application of technical analysis as a method for interpreting market psychology and its influence upon stock valuation over time. In addition to the specifics of valuation, the course explores the ways that these tools are used to value stocks. (Y)
