GBUS 876 - Creating Value through Relationships

This course will increase students’ awareness of the dynamics of interpersonal relationships and provide practical experiences that give them the opportunity to improve their interpersonal effectiveness. Students will learn that one of the most basic and profound contributions to managers’ success is the ability to create high-quality relationships with colleagues and to link these relationships together to form a network that sustains its members and facilitates the organization’s work. Because nearly every contribution made to an organization will be influenced by the quality of relationships sustained with others, effective leadership is, essentially, effective relationship management. Primary learning in the course comes from participation in face-to-face laboratory experiences while readings and cases serve as supplements. Topics include communication, feedback and performance appraisal, active listening, working with diversity, and confronting problems in working relationships. With emphasis on future management contexts, students will discover how others perceive them and what behaviors enhance or detract from their interpersonal effectiveness. (Y)
