MSE 714 - Physics of Materials

This is a fundamental course dealing with the physical principles governing the thermal, electronic, optical and magnetic properties of engineering materials. The lectures integrate the materials science paradigm of structure-properties-processing with the basic concepts of solid state physics. Strong emphasis is placed on the general concepts relating to wave-particle diffraction and the application of basic quantum mechanics, Maxwell’s equations and statistical mechanics to explaining the behavior of various types of solids.

Prerequisites & Notes
Prerequisite: B.S. in Chemistry, Physics or Engineering. An introductory course in materials science also recommended, but waived with permission of instructor.
