HIST 509 - Multiculturalism in the Ottoman Empire Study of how a large empire governed a diverse population, between 1453 and 1981, from the perspective of concerns about recent nationalist, racial and ethnic conflicts in modern nation-states. Course first examines how the Ottomans managed relations between ethnic and religious groups to 1750. Course then examines reasons for increased communal conflict after 1750, and Ottoman efforts to re-engineer relations among groups along liberal, constitutional lines. (Y)
