BIOL 856 - Ecological Applications of GIS

Understanding the spatial distribution of living organisms and the resources they utilize is key to addressing many issues in ecology and conservation.  This course will cover the fundamentals of Geographic Information System (GIS) and spatial analysis as applied to biological questions.  Through laboratory assignments and independent projects, students will learn to use ArcGIS Suite, and become informed GIS users.  Field trips will allow students to utilize Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and learn to incorporate this technology into spatial analysis.  In addition to laboratory and lecture, we will explore the applications of GIS in ecology, evolution, conservation, disease ecology, and human land-use through analysis and discussion of the primary literature.
