BIOL 352 - Herpetology

The southern Appalachians are home to a wonderful diversity of frogs, salamanders, turtles, lizards and snakes. We will use the local herpetofauna as the framework to explore amphibian and reptile life history and diversity. The course will consist of lectures on amphibian and reptile biology; laboratory exercises on identification, ecology and behavior; and intensive field trips to learn standard methods for: 1) monitoring and measuring amphibian and reptile diversity; 2) observing behavior and ecology; 3) noting natural history details; and 4) studying ecology and behavior. Students will spend extended periods in the field and should be prepared to negotiate rough terrain and work in inclement weather.
