L AR 512 - Landscape Architectural History

Examines landscape architecture as an expression of cultural values. Rather than attempt a broad survey of numerous works of a period, the lectures concentrate on a few prototypical examples. Special attention is given to ancient Egypt, 16th-century Italy, 17th-century France, 17th-century Japan, 18th-century Britain, and 17th- to 20th-century America. The comparative case study approach is complemented by primary and secondary source readings. (Y)
