Executive Education Programs


An important aspect of the McIntire School’s mission is serving the continuing education needs of the private and public sectors. The area of executive business education continues to grow and change as businesses realized the importance of keeping their manager’s skills current with the dynamic nature of industries and markets. The McIntire School of Commerce seeks to address these education needs through the following types of programs:


Commerce Certificate Programs


McIntire Business Institute (MBI) - Business Fundamentals Certificate

Current undergraduate students, recent bachelor degree graduates from non-business backgrounds and working professionals  will benefit from the MBI Business Fundamentals program where you will gain a fundamental understanding of business, including accounting, finance, Excel, management, and marketing.

Academic Year: Offered August to April; Meets every Friday in-person at Rouss Roberson Halls, 11 a.m. - 1:45 p.m.

Summer Residency: Offered late May to late June at Rouss Robertson Halls. Meets in-person Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.

Business Essentials Online Certificate

Working professionals, individuals considering further study in business, recent college graduates, and current students seeking a basic understanding of business skills and organizations will benefit from the Business Essentials program. This online program is designed for non-business majors seeking a flexible way to gain essential business skills and introduces the principles of accounting, finance, management, and marketing. 

An 11-week online program with multiple starts each year, typically in January, June, and September.

Sustainable Business Certificate

Working rofessionals in business, nonprofits and governmental organizations seeking to build more sustainable organizations or communities will find value in this program. Upper level college or graduate students wishing to explore sustainable business will also benefit from learning about this growing and exciting discipline.

A 15-week online program with multiple starts each year, typically in May and September.

Cybersecurity for Business Leaders Certificate

Business leaders, managers and employees seeking to develop and implement real-world cybersecurity solutions will benefit from this program. You will be exposed to contemporary cybersecurity practices using a combination of live discussions with professors and practitioners online videos, online discussions and technology simulations. This certificate has four segments: 1) infrastructure basics, 2) overview of cyber-attacks, 3) managing risk, and 4) incident response planning.

A 12-week online program that starts twice each year, typically in January and September.

Enrollment and Withdrawal

Students are enrolled in the UVA Student Information System (SIS) and will be able to see MBI on their UVA transcript. Please note that MBI follows the University’s withdrawal and refund schedule. Withdrawing after the second week of the program begins triggers in the schedule and you will be responsible for a percentage of tuition. You will also receive a W (withdrawal) on your transcript for the certificate program. Withdrawals must be sent in writing to the program manage in order to initiate the process with UVA.


Customized Executive Education Programs


The McIntire School works closely with individual firms and organizations in custom designing and presenting programs to meet their unique needs. Over the past few years, McIntire has designed custom programs including the NACAS Sr. Leadership Forum, Leadership Excellence in the Accounting Profession (LEAP) and the McIntire Executive Certificate in Management Program.


Sponsored Lectures and Seminars


This program encourages an exchange of ideas among business, banking, and government leaders through a continuing series of lectures, seminars, conferences, and workshops. These include workshops sponsored by the Finance, IT, Management, and Marketing Areas at McIntire. The Finance, Management, and Marketing Areas conduct speaker workshops in conjunction with faculty at Darden.
