School of Graduate Nursing: Facilities and Resources

Return to: School of Nursing

Advising Cooperation and personal attention mark the relations between faculty members and students. Each graduate student is assigned an academic faculty advisor upon admission to the school, and students are encouraged to avail themselves of this resource. The School of Nursing Office of Admissions and Student Services provides assistance and serves as a source of information for other support resources.

Claude Moore Health Sciences Library The library primarily serves the faculty, students, and staff of the UVA Health System, which includes the Schools of Medicine and Nursing and the UVA Medical Center. The library is a modern facility that features quiet study and group study space, a space with video conferencing capabilities that are HIPAA compliant, classrooms, a multipurpose space, computers, and a presentation studio. The library licenses over 4,400 journal titles and provides access to over 44,000 electronic and print books and 1,700 multimedia programs. The library’s large collection of databases includes OVID Medline, ScienceDirect, AccessMedicine, Web of Science, UpToDate, and ClinicalKey. For interdisciplinary research, Health System affiliates have access to the entire UVA online holdings, including over 462,000 ebooks, 174,000 journals, and 1,000 databases. Interlibrary loan, at no cost to Health System affiliates, is available to obtain research materials not available at the University.

Cooperating Clinical Institutions and Agencies The School of Nursing cooperates with other institutions and agencies to provide clinical learning opportunities for students. Utilizing health departments, community hospitals, out-patient facilities, home care agencies, industries, schools, older adult care facilities, mental health care facilities, and rehabilitation centers, the School of Nursing provides varied clinical experiences for its students.

Counseling The Department of Student Health and University Counseling and Psychological Center (CAPS) are available to assist students.

McLeod Hall & Claude Moore Nursing Education Building Located in the eastern part of the University Grounds, near the UVA Medical Center, the school occupies the Claude Moore Nursing Education Building and McLeod Hall. McLeod Hall is a five-story brick building that has housed the School of Nursing since its dedication in November 1972. Claude Moore Nursing Education Building is a four story facility that opened in June 2008. The facilities house classrooms, an auditorium, clinical learning laboratories, seminar rooms, and offices.

The School of Nursing draws upon the multiple resources of the University’s 11 academic divisions and the UVA Health System. The graduate programs in nursing are further strengthened by the facilities and personnel of a wide variety of Virginia hospitals, community health centers, health departments, and private physicians offices.

Parking Interested students may contact UVA Parking & Transportation for information on student parking permits: https://parking.virginia.edu/student-parking. Students must comply with UVA Health System policies prohibiting use of patient parking by all non-patients.

UVA Health System The School of Nursing is a part of the UVA Health System, which serves as the referral center for central and western Virginia and has been consistently ranked among the nation’s top 100 health care centers. The nursing program enjoys a special relationship with the UVA Medical Center, a 602-bed teaching and research hospital.

Special units in the UVA Medical Center complex include a children’s hospital; a cancer center; a clinical research center; cardiac, medical, and surgical intensive care units; and a burn and wound care center. The Pegasus Air Emergency Rescue Service can transport patients from up to 500 miles.
